My art is an invitation to see beyond the apparent. Using discarded materials – magazines, maps, and other ephemera – as my ‘paint’ fosters the idea of finding beauty in the overlooked, while lessening my carbon footprint.
This project inspired me to move from 2-D to 3-D. The challenge was to hold onto what I like about my usual collage work while seeing what happens when I impose flat work onto curved surfaces. The result was artistically sparser, but pleasingly dreamlike. Because I use recycled material, it seemed quite natural to work on recycling a pony which needed new life.
Night Mare is an homage to my years as an earth science teacher, and my fascination with Van Gogh, especially his “Starry Night” painting. There are some surprises in this mare – just keep looking!
“I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.”
