Like so many women, I was horse-crazy as a girl. For years I’ve wanted to create horse-related art, and this piece is my debut – participating felt like a homecoming.
Unlike most other artists participating in Pony Up!, I was offered a head instead of a whole pony. I created a centauress to represent women’s strength, beauty, and power. ‘Phoenix Rising’ is an homage to Talley, who has survived tremendous medical odds.
As an environmentally-aware artist, my artwork is made with feathers created from recycled plastic and screen-printed with images of endangered birds. From a distance, these feathers look like textiles, paper, or even a horsehair mane. Dressing ‘Phoenix’ with a breastplate and skirt of feathers gives her both Egyptian and Greek references.
I am so grateful to Talley and her team for this opportunity.
“The wild woman rises like a phoenix from the ashes of her life, to become the heroine of her own legend.”
