Tina’s Pony was created to honor my friend Kathy’s daughter, Tina, who died tragically just before her 3rd birthday. With her sparkles, flowers, and little red hooves, I wanted her to radiate the happiness Tina’s short life brought to those who knew her, and to provide a sense of hope and lift the spirits of those who see it.
Allowing complex colors and patterns to evolve as I work, my style is detailed, neat, and orderly, incorporating a variety of objects into my mosaics. That process can be difficult with a project such as this pony’s surface, with many curves, nooks, and crannies. Tiles needed to be cut into irregular shapes, multiple adhesives were required, and painted surfaces were incorporated into mosaic ones. With all the elements of design in place, ‘Tina’s Pony’ is a fitting, happy tribute to the little girl for whom it was named.
“How very softly you tiptoed into our world, almost silently. Only a moment you stayed. But what an imprint your footsteps have left upon our hearts."
